Hands-on fishing

Active and Passive play · Evidence checked August 17, 2026
Use the official Passive Mode feature for lower-attention fishing while keeping legendary, achievement, automation, and loadout claims tied to a dated build and exact settings.

The cast n chill idle mode is the official Passive Mode option for fishing with less direct attention, including a second-monitor or resizable-window use case described in official material. It is safe to confirm the mode exists, but legendary catches, achievements, automatic loadout behavior, and target-specific results remain patch-sensitive because community reports conflict.

A quieter pace
The game can handle routine fishing while you focus on something else.
OfficialMode descriptions verified August 18, 2026.
Official sources present both approaches as legitimate ways to play. Active Mode places the player in the fishing loop and is the clearest way to observe casting, retrieve, line pressure, lure response, and a fish fight. Passive Mode reduces the amount of direct interaction so fishing can continue while attention moves elsewhere.
This distinction describes pace, not a guarantee that both modes produce identical results. The collected official pages do not publish a current species-by-species Passive Mode eligibility table. Any claim about a specific trophy, legendary target, achievement, or automation edge case needs the build and settings that produced it.
For a new player, Active Mode is useful for learning what the interface communicates. Passive Mode becomes easier to evaluate after the player can recognize the selected location, rod, lure, time, and logbook state before automation begins.
Before lowering attention
Choose the location and target intent first. If the goal is routine catches or money, record what the current source or logbook supports at that water. If the goal is a specific fish, size, trophy, legendary catch, or achievement, note that the result may require active control or a version-specific condition that has not been verified here.
Record the selected rod, lure, time, and any visible automation options before switching modes. A Steam discussion raises the possibility that idle loadout behavior can surprise players, but the research does not establish a universal bug. Screenshots before and after entering Passive Mode are the best way to show whether a value changed in the current build.
If auto-lure or a similar restriction is visible, document its exact state. One community report associates manually selected rod, lure, and time with some idle outcomes when auto-lure is disabled. That is a player observation, not an official recipe, and it should not be applied to every target.
Practical expectations
The official positioning supports lower-attention fishing as a core use case. Player footage also describes auto or idle fishing as a way to accumulate catches and money. That footage demonstrates one player’s workflow and cannot prove a fixed earning rate, an unchanged result across patches, or access to every species.
A useful passive session log includes start and end times, location, equipment, game version, automation settings, catch list, and any progress or currency change shown by the interface. Avoid publishing a per-hour estimate from a short or undocumented session. Dynamic results need the same date and configuration as any other performance snapshot.
Routine catches can still reveal data quality issues. If a fish appears with a previously unpublished location or setup, capture the result and compare it with the current wiki record. Do not update a row from memory after the session; preserve the source evidence first.
Conflicting community reports
One Steam discussion reports that legendary fish were patched not to be attracted during idle play. Another reports that some players may catch legendary targets while idle after disabling auto-lure and manually choosing rod, lure, and time. These claims cannot both be converted into one timeless rule without identifying versions and matching test conditions.
The correct status is To be confirmed for the current build and target. A valid test must specify whether the fish had already been recorded, the location, time, equipment, automation options, session duration, platform, and build. A single positive or negative session should be described as an observation rather than a guarantee.
Achievement behavior deserves the same caution. A report about completing some objectives during idle play is community-reported. It does not establish that every achievement can progress passively or that the rule is unchanged.
When Passive Mode disappoints
Confirm that the intended location, rod, lure, and time remain selected after entering Passive Mode. Check whether an automatic setting replaced a manual choice. If a target-specific clue came from a community source, verify its date and whether the post described Active or Passive fishing.
Next, reproduce the same setup in Active Mode. This does not prove the target should appear, but it can reveal whether casting, retrieve, depth, line control, or a visible prompt is part of the problem. Change one variable at a time so the comparison remains interpretable.
Document no-result sessions honestly. “Not observed during this dated test” is stronger than declaring a fish impossible. Passive outcomes can depend on rarity, session length, settings, and version, none of which should be hidden behind an absolute answer.
Idle Mode FAQ
Yes. The official press kit and Steam material present Active and Passive fishing as supported play styles.
Not verified. The official sources do not publish a current eligibility table, and legendary claims conflict across community discussions.
One community report links manually selected settings and auto-lure being off with some results. Treat that as a dated test lead, not a universal instruction.
Some players report progress under particular settings, but the collected evidence does not verify every achievement or the current rule.
Record platform, build, date, location, rod, lure, time, automation settings, target, duration, catches, and the before-and-after interface state.
Repeatable observation
For the same target, preserve the location, rod, lure, time, game build, and observation duration, then record which mode was active. Note whether auto-lure or another option changed. This produces a useful dated comparison even when neither session catches the target.
Do not combine results from different maps, versions, or loadouts into one success rate. The official sources verify the two modes, while probabilities and target eligibility require a much stronger sample than the collected evidence provides.
